Partners and Projects
The Planning and Housing Development
Division of SRO Housing Corporation (the Director and
a Project Manager) oversee all new housing development
projects undertaken by the organization. Projects include
the reconstruction and rehabilitation of existing buildings,
capital improvements to existing buildings and the construction
of new sites. Staff members oversee projects from conception
to completion, beginning by seeking funding from agencies
like the Los Angeles Housing Department (LAHD), the
Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), the State of California
Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD),
the City of Industry and the Low Income Housing Tax
Credit Program (LIHTC). They then weigh in on preliminary
design concepts, the selection of architects, consultants and general contractors
as well as site design issues like colors and furnishings.
Finally, the project is handed over to the Housing Management
Division to achieve occupancy. Planning and Housing
Development staff members also work at the macro level,
scanning the horizon for new funding opportunities and
projects.
SRO Housing Corporation has worked
with award-winning architects like Michael Lehrer of
Lehrer Architects, Killefer Flammang Architects and
Dvoretzky Bardovi Bunnell Architects. General contractors
include Westport Development and Dreyfuss Construction.
Based on our accomplishments as an
affordable housing developer, SRO Housing Corporation
was asked by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority
(LAHSA) to build the Downtown Homeless Drop-In Center.
Completed in 1999, the Downtown Homeless Drop-In Center
is an 8,000 square foot temporary shelter that offers
showers, community space, emergency shelter beds, storage
space and case management services to the homeless community.
Today the Drop-In Center is operated by Volunteers of
America Los Angeles, a local homeless services provider.
The Downtown Homeless Drop-In Center was the first facility
of its kind, earning awards for its design and construction.
